Technical information

VARIENG, we make every effort to ensure technical compatibility and usability with the eSeries – that it is compatible with all the major web browsers and is easy to use, logically structured, and aesthetically pleasing from the reader’s point of view. All articles published in the eSeries conform to W3C specifications (HTML 5, HTML 4.01 or XHTML 1.0, either Strict or Transitional) and have been validated against them. Semantic content is divorced from visualization as far as possible with the use of Cascading Style Sheets.

For these reasons, any browser capable of displaying HTML and CSS will be able to render the eSeries correctly. However, to fully exploit the potential of an electronic publication (versus a traditional print publication), we occasionally make use of JavaScript to add dynamic content, such as zoomable figures, to the articles. Such articles are viewable also on platforms that do not support JavaScript, however, as fallback routines have been designed to cater for them. We also occasionally use Flash technology to incorporate multimedia content, primarily audio and video, into articles. Whenever possible, we offer such content in a number of formats (e.g. in AVI and RealPlayer formats in addition to Flash) to ensure maximal compatibility.

It is possible to print articles published in the eSeries by using the browser’s print function. This works like printing any other webpage. Do note, however, that in printing all dynamic and multimedia content is lost. For that reason, we recommend reading the articles online.

Should you encounter an error with the eSeries, or if you have any questions regarding the form or function of the eSeries, please contact the web editor.
