List of Part-of-Speech Tags

The POS-tagged version makes use of the C8 tagset, a somewhat enriched version of the C7 tagset used for the BNC Sampler. The main difference between the C7 and the C8 tagsets is that the latter makes distinctions between auxiliary and main verbs, which is a valuable improvement for certain syntactic searches (e.g. for the be-passive, or the present perfect).

To enable comparable tag-based searches and analyses to be made using the comparable corpora Brown, LOB, Frown and F-LOB, all corpora were re-tagged using the C8 tagset. The details and results of this can be followed up in Leech et al. (2009). Hence the tagging of BLOB-1931 with C8 enables precise diachronic comparisons to be made using BLOB-1931, LOB and F-LOB.
