Basic structure of the corpus

Figure 1 displays the schematic structure of the corpus. The main parts of the corpus are indicated by the four boxes, and the lines between the boxes show the main types of studies which this structure makes possible:

• contrastive studies based on parallel original texts (see the solid diagonal line in Figure 1);
• contrastive studies based on original texts and their translations, going from source text to translation and/or from translation to source text (see the solid horizontal lines in Figure 1);
• various types of translation studies, focusing on e.g. (a) translation problems viewed from either language (see the solid horizontal lines in Figure 1), (b) deviations of translations from original texts in the same language (see the vertical lines in Figure 1), and (c) general features of translations (see the dotted diagonal line in Figure 1).

Balancing the corpus in this way simplifies the different types of comparison made possible by the structure.

Parameter or other coding

The coding of the texts is in broad agreement with the TEI guidelines for electronic texts. See the manual for further details.

Genres covered by the corpus

Fiction: General Fiction (FG), Children's Fiction (FC), Detective Fiction (FD), Non-fiction: modified version of the Dewey decimal classification system.
